Aion’s Haunting Melodies

I know I am not the only one who enjoys a good video game soundtrack and Aion’s soundtrack is one of my absolute favorites.

I actually fell in love with the soundtrack to Aion when I received it as a bonus item in my collector’s edition copy of the game. I really love that they put the soundtrack in there as so often collector’s editions have useless crap in them that I never use/didn’t want to begin with. The official “Aion: The Tower of Eternity” Original Soundtrack features 22 tracks written by composer Yang Bang-Ean (Also known as Kunihiko Ryo in Japan). Sadly this does not encompass ALL the music found within the game, but it is an excellent sampling of it.

Through all my hours upon hours of playing Aion (I played it for about 6 months including all 6 closed beta weekends, then I quit for about a year and a half, then came back for two months before finally calling it quits for good) I very much enjoyed the beautiful music in the game. The music added a much needed ambiance while playing that sets it apart from many other games. In the beginning Aion was a fantastic game to play, but it quickly lost its luster as it gave way to an endless grind. The grind-style of gameplay is very popular in Korea where the game originates, but sadly it just isn’t for me. (I am the mouse that eventually realizes there will not be another piece of cheese dispensed to me no matter how many shocks I endure hehe).

Lucky for me, I still have my soundtrack to listen to whenever I feel a nostalgic pang and need to hear it. After all, I have so many fond memories of the game; meeting new online friends, running a legion (that’s a guild for those who don’t know), and maiming zombie piggies just to name a few. Listening to the soundtrack brings all those good memories back for me.

My favorite track is “Death Waltz”. It has an eerie quality that suggests a mystical fantasy land filled with hidden horrors around any corner. Fall into the sway as you forget your troubled memories and lull yourself into a false sense of security as you dance with a masked partner in a ballroom full of mysteries. It makes me think of what the Masquerade Ball scene in Labyrinth would look like if they made it much more sinister. There was a time I would sit and listen to this song on repeat for what seemed like hours. Take a listen to the video below and you will see what I mean.

If you never got the original soundtrack in the collector’s edition as I did, don’t worry you can still obtain it. It’s available on Amazon. Give it a listen and you will need to own it. All of the melodies will carry you away to another place of wonder and beauty. In addition to that, there are now three more soundtracks that have been released as well! I am really thinking I will have to get them too. They are called “Annales Of Atreia“, ”Utopia“, and “Another World“.

As I write this article I have “Death Waltz” on an endless loop once more and it is still just as beautifully haunting today as it was then. What is your favorite track?
