Geeky Moms
It almost goes without saying that if you have a geeky mom, you too are destined for geekiness. Here’s to all of our geeky mommies!
Geek moms tend to spread the love when it comes to the things they find interesting. If your mom likes tech stuff, you will have the best computers in your house, and all the greatest new gadgets. On the other hand if your mom loves anime, then you can bet your house will be filled to the brim with anime merchandise and you will spend your afterschool time snacking on Pocky and watching the latest anime of choice. It’s a well known fact that mom runs the house, often manages the finances, and keeps the kids in line (with the help of a stern look from dad on occasion). No matter what your mom is into, she will share it with the entire household and it will probably rub off on you in a good way.
Speaking of tech geek moms, I found these adorable pics of kids who must have either PC or Mac fan mommies.

These are the kind of things that you might hate while it’s happening, (or maybe you thought of it and mom went along with it!), and normally get a great laugh out of later in life. Computer geek moms always tend to have the most top of the line gadgets around the house, can fix your computer and have the tools on hand to do it, and also make sure that as many things as possible run off of one remote lol. Smart parents normally equate to smart children that often surpass their parents in intellect. These kids will most likely go on to become computer geniuses that provide us with the next generation of gadgetry and perhaps even invent those hover cars we have been waiting so patiently for. Its 2010… we need our hover cars… we were promised hover cars! Since they happen to be twins maybe these things will come to us twice as fast? One can hope!
Some people don’t think “Goth” is geeky… well I beg to differ with that opinion. I spent my teenage years and early twenties wrapped up in Goth culture, hanging out in Goth clubs, and saving money for a shiny new vinyl corset, knee high boots, or just more makeup. I still love all those things to this day and it is really geeky! I think it’s like “geek noir” really.

If your mommy is a Goth girl, then this is what your first baby pics are going to look like… and omg this is adorable!! I imagine that the wings were likely to have been hand made since they are so small. Having spent so much time enjoying all things Goth, I knew a lot of people who had babies and transferred their unique brand of creativity onto their children. Sometimes this worked out pretty well; other times it was a bit confusing and a little scary lol.
I have seen a few onesies out there that were aimed at the Goth/rock audience that are incredibly cute. I have also seen many a crafty mommy hand make things for her darling little one since there was nothing mainstream out there that suited her taste, and it was often amazing work! It just goes to show that you can be into vampires, magic, and a hell of a lot of black, and still find ways to cutely spread your favorite things to your children.

This however, is not the right way to go about it lol. I have to say it… *disclaimer* this is a work of art and should not be used for cradling actual babies. Now that I have said that – I have to admit that I think this cradle is seriously awesome. If it weren’t liable to slice, dice, and julienne your baby then I would fully support using this! The amount of detail that went into crafting this is really masterful and it is a shame that it can’t actually be used. Perhaps another more suitable option would be to hand paint a cradle to look as though it was made from razor sharp blades so that it wouldn’t hurt the baby. Someone should really try that out and see if it looks cool or just lame lol.
There is one thing that is universally considered geeky, and that’s Star Wars. Star Wars moms are among the royalty of the geek kingdom, and for good reason as they tend to take it to a whole new level lol. Not to say I don’t like me some Star Wars, but sometimes there should be a limit you know? From full blown Star Wars weddings, all the way to simply carrying a Star Wars lunchbox to work, there are varied levels of fandom.

I think this baby is definitely within the limits, Just look at his adorable little light saber? It looks like he could slobber all over it safely too. As the cutest Yoda I ever saw… drool, he must! What better way to transport your little Yoda or Obi Wan than with the stroller on baby Yoda’s right? Although I am not that big a Star Wars fan, I can really appreciate where these parents were coming from when they bought such a cool stroller. Looks like Daddy was put on stroller duty in the picture so mom could go check out some booths nearby. Maybe mom will bring home a Twi’lek hat?

Anime/cosplay fan moms must love that they don’t have to wait for Halloween every year to dress up their kids in awesome costumes. This little girl is certainly nothing to mess with in her amazing Voltron suit! Personally I feel that getting to run around wearing that would be super awesome. Certainly that kid could win 1st place at a convention right? Her mommy is probably a huge mecha fan and slaved away for hours on this suit getting all the intricate details right and I bet mom has every episode on a collector’s edition DVD too!

There is a softer side to anime and cosplay as well though, and for moms who dig the Lolita look there is Rozen Maiden. This little girl’s costume is so sweet and delicate, it must have taken some time for mom to painstakingly sew the whole outfit and make sure it fit perfectly. There’s nothing like dressing up as a killer doll to make you feel powerful right? I believe that would have been a fun bonding experience for mother and daughter to go through, and the conventions that mom takes her to in order to show off the costume and her adorable little girl would be a ton of fun. Not to mention she could possibly wear the dress later to formal events! Once she has grown out of it, mom will probably put it in a keepsake chest and remember all the wonderful days she spent with her daughter wearing it.
Finally there is the type of mom that every kid wishes they had, and that’s the video game geek mom. When your mom loves video games as much as you do, it’s just simply WIN! You get to do all of your math and English learning with the new video games that teach you fundamental skills to begin with, and then you get to play sim games once you’re old enough to understand the inner workings of them, then you get to pwn noobs online with mom cheering you on. Also, mom will lovingly bake you awesome 1up cupcakes for the school bake sales, and on your 16th birthday you might get an awesome Mushroom Kingdom cake, (or whatever game you love best).

I’m even hearing that more and more moms play games such as World of Warcraft with their kids and play in the same guild so they can not only get in some good game time and teach their kids how to play, but also keep an eye on what is happing in their children’s online experience. It might seem like the height of geekdom for a mom to actually log the hours with their kids, but I think it’s really valuable in keeping your child out of harm’s way on the internet. The experience online can vary depending on who else is in the game with them, and who knows who that might be? Better safe and having fun than sorry.
Is it just kids with geeky moms that are destined to become geeks though? Nope. My mom was not a geek, she was a rocker and liked to stay up late and party a lot. This had a whole different set of perks for me. At age six I almost got to see Pink Floyd in concert! I had the worst luck though and got an ear infection a week before that was so bad my eardrum ruptured so mom wouldn’t take me with her after that. I got to stay up really late (with the rule being that I had to wake up in the morning and if I couldn’t then I got my bedtime cut back to an earlier time). Also, I got to see the Grateful Dead and partied with the hippies in the parking lot lol. Ultimately it was a blast! So why am I such a total geek then? Mostly because of the people I made friends with, and because my mom nurtured my creativity, no matter what it was that I liked.
Our moms help to shape the people we will become, and they steer the course we take, but we are still individuals who chart our own courses. So, while having a geek for a mom might steer you down the path to being a geek yourself, it might also steer you away from it. Just always remember that moms do what they do because they love you and want the best for you, while still sharing what they are passionate about with you. You might end up hating all things related to anime if you were forced against your will to cosplay as a kid, but that doesn’t mean your mom did it to spite you. So this Mother’s day, get her something that she will love like her favorite anime on DVD, a subscription to Gamefly, a new pair of Grinders, or maybe a new tech gadget (iPad?). Here’s to all the geek mommies (even the ones I failed to mention) out there lovingly fostering in a new generation of geeks, we love you!
